Do you love the romance of snowy mountain landscapes? Then Zermatt, which lies at 1,620 metres above sea level, is the perfect place for you. The village is shaped by age-old tradition: rows of 500-year-old timber houses nestle alongside typical Upper Valais barns and storehouses on wooden stilts.
In 1865, Englishman Edward Whymper made the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Since then, Zermatt has developed from a difficult-to-reach mountain village to a world-famous tourism destination. Some 6,000 people live here today. The various shops, boutiques, cafés and bars can be easily reached on foot, and the village centre is completely car-free. Surrounded by imposing peaks, the village is the perfect starting point for skiing, cross-country skiing and climbing tours as well as hikes.
